Contrasting Marks in drawing

Mark making is the basis of all drawing, yet sometimes people think of it as a separate exercise. However a little thought and attention to the marks we use and how we use them can have massive impact on our drawings.

When I look at my own drawings I see a variety of marks. However, the decisions I make about which marks to use where are typically spontaneous and driven by an emotional response to my subject. This can contribute to my drawing in an effective way. But there are plenty of times when it doesn’t. In fact it can detract.

For me, looking at Contrasting Marks is about being a lot more intentional and seeing how this impacts our drawing.

My strategy to explore this subject is to choose just one pair of contrasting marks and to explore what happens when we use them within our drawings.

In this video I demonstrate creating a range of contrasting marks.
