Inspired by Pancakes - Reference Pics for you!
A little something to inspire you this pancake day
There is something about pancakes. Obviously, there’s the smell, the flavour and the fun of the flip. These things take me back to childhood. We only ever ate pancakes on Shrove Tuesday.

Fast forward to adulthood and the realisation I could eat pancakes whenever I like! A few years back, around 2021 my boyfriend and I had a pancake making phase. It seemed like a great start to a relaxed weekend. The relaxed start, and our relaxed attitude to tidying up meant as I sat savouring my coffee, I noticed beauty in the mess we created to produce these delights. The crinkly paper packet the flour came in, the appealing shape of lemons, the texture of flour and the range of shapes in the utensils and equipment we used. It inspired me then and it inspires me now.
What with pancake day being just around the corner here in the UK, I thought it might be fun to create and share some pancake related reference images (it is Still Life month in the paid subscription after all). You are welcome to draw from these and I’d love to see if you do! Or perhaps it will inspire you to document your own pancake making?
I’ll leave you with some further inspo courtesy of William Scott, one of the artists I’ve shared as part of our Still Life month. This really makes me want to include a black frying pan in my sketches. How about you?
Thanks for reading,
Jo

Ooooo, love this so much! I really do enjoy still lives (still lifes? Argentinian, wondering about that spelling), seeing them, arranging them, stumbling upon them, and obviously, drawing and painting them. It always makes me a bit sad, that they are thought of as this old, boring thing. Objects can be soooo beautiful and so diverse, too, so you got all the elements and principles of art right there for you to play with!!!
Not to mention, p a n c a k e s. Food and cooking (and eating) always inspires my senses, so this is a nice glimpse into someone else's process and view 🥰 Love all of it!
I loved hearing your pancake story and seeing your previous sketches! All very inspiring! My Grandmother used to make us pancakes for dinner when we slept over her house and I occasionally did this with my sons. Thank you for the reference photos too❤️
